Grandio Hobby Greenhouse - Base Kit Assembly Guide

Grandio Green Houses - Base Kit Assembly Guide:

Pre-Plan The Placement Of Your Structure;
Allow enough room to get a wheel barrow in and around your structure.
Be sure the orientation will allow for proper drainage in and around your greenhouse.
It is recommended that you place your greenhouse in an area of your property that receives the most sunlight but is also somewhat protected by trees, fencing or your home for wind protection and also to keep the temperature up during early spring and late fall.

The best placement depends on the features of your property, it is suggested in most scenarios to have your greenhouse face South on its broadest side and to have the door face East or West depending on typical wind directions in your area. Do not worry if your orientation will not allow for the placement to be as suggested, as a greenhouse that is facing North is better than no greenhouse at all.
Avoid building your greenhouse at the base of a slope as these are often frost pockets where cold air collects, this will not be good for your greenhouse in keeping the temperature up inside.

Extreme Wind Conditions: If you live in a windy location there is no way to build a 100% storm safe greenhouse, but there are a number of things you can do to minimize the chance of damage. Ensure that the base is level and square, be sure all panels are tightly in place and that all aluminum extrusions are tight. The main problem is usually that wind gets into the greenhouse and the pressure pushes a panel out and then the force of the wind on the interior causes more damage. It is best if you are expecting an extreme weather event that you disable any auto roof vents and make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked shut. Also you may need to build a wind break for extreme condition areas where wind is constant and extreme.

It is ideal for your greenhouse to have water, electricity and even gas plumbed into place before construction. This will make watering plants and keeping the temperature and air circulation to the max efficiency.

For Cement Base Installation: We suggest you use wedge style concrete anchoring bolts to secure your structure.
For Deck Base Installation: We recommend you use a set of anchoring bolts to secure your structure.
For Earth Installation: We recommend you use the anchoring system provided and bury corner posts into the ground and seal into place with Quickrete.

2015 Grandio Elite Greenhouse Review

2015 Grandio Elite Greenhouse Review

#1 Pick - Top Hobby Greenhouse

We love almost everything about the Grandio Elite Greenhouses.
The Grandio Elite models feature high-quality metal frames, thick 10mm dual-layer polycarbonate, tall (8'2") barn-style roofs, and sliding double doors that are bind resistant. They also have built-in rain gutters on both sides of the greenhouse, they come with roof vents that have adjustable openers and latches, they are fitted with extra roof and side supports to increase wind and snow load strength, and they are powder coated to both enhance the finish of the metal frame (powder coating is much tougher than standard paint) and to give a pleasing, dark green color that fits nicely into your yard decor. And they are available in sizes from 8'x8' through 8'x24'.

Greenhouse Frame Grandio Elites are made with powder-coated, aluminum framed pieces that fit together with stainless steel nuts and bolts. The actual frame pieces of the Grandios are impressively thick and rugged. We've looked at a number of aluminum greenhouses and there are vast differences in the thickness and strength of the frames that we've seen. On the lower end you'll find frames that are thin and bendable and are not designed to withstand much wind or snow load and will likely not last long if the greenhouse is left outside all year round. The Grandio frame pieces are definitely on the higher end of the strength spectrum and parts of them look like mini versions of steel girders.

We actually took a couple different frame pieces from the Grandio, hung them across exposed roof rafters and we could do chin-ups without them bending (okay, not many chin-ups, but that's a problem with arm strength.) We took the thckest pieces from another aluminum greenhouse (we won't name the brand, but it's one that is sold in local hardware outlet stores) and tried the chin-up test and the pieces bent right in half. While we don't necessarily recommend using your greenhouse parts for exercising, what this means for you is that the Grandios will stand up to higher wind levels and higher snow loads without bending or collapsing than many other hobby greenhouses. Let's also talk a bit about the powder-coating on the frame.

As mentioned earlier, powder coating is a process where metal is coated with a hard finish through an electrostatic process. What this means for the Grandio frame is that instead of having a raw, exposed aluminum frame you will have a frame with a tough and durable green coating that serves to protect the underlying metal from the elements and help keep it from discoloring, rusting, or oxidizing. Many of the "silver" colored greenhouses have no coating at all and are just raw aluminum. Some others have colored frames, but may just be painted and not actually powder-coated. That might be slightly better than just raw aluminum, but paint can easily be scratched and can flake off (you can test how soft paint on aluminum is by scratching it with your thumbnail.) The better greenhouses out there will come with powder-coating so we suggest looking for that when shopping around.

Another great feature of the Grandio frames is the extra supports and cross beams that have been added to the greenhouses. The cross beam pieces are set diagonally in the frame to help firm up and strengthen and minimize any side to side movement. The extra support pieces are attached from the upper walls and reach up and attach to the lower roof. These help provide roof support and add strength to the roof sections. We've had a 16' greenhouse in the past that didn't have any kind of supports like these and after a couple of years the roof was sagging in the middle noticeably. All these frame features add up to a very strong, rigid, and durable frame that we put in the same category as some of the better competing models such as Riga greenhouses and the Juliana Premium greenhouses, that are also very good but may be quite a lot more money than the Grandios. Greenhouse Installation The installation of our Grandio Greenhouse was surprisingly easy. While any project like this is daunting when you first open the boxes and see all the parts (I'm looking at you Wal-mart loft bed with attached dresser and desk), but the instructions were very well diagrammed which made it very easy to determine the process and order of fitting parts together, mounting the panels, inserting the roof vents, etc.

We've set up a few other greenhouses that were miserable to put together and had instructions that appeared to have been written by someone who either had never seen a greenhouse, did not speak English, or more likely both. If you've ever had to put together an item from overseas with the confusing and poorly translated instructions then you will understand what we went through. In comparison, the Grandio instructions seemed well thought out and were not difficult to follow, especially once we worked out a system where we inventoried all of the parts and separated them first. That way we were able to get an assembly line kind of thing going and go down the line bolting parts into place for the various sections of the greenhouse.

Probably the best tip we can give to help with the installation is to check, double check, measure again, and then check one last time that the base gets set absolutely square and level. This will make everything else then go very smoothly and easily, and the parts will line up and fit properly. This is true of any greenhouse and by the time we set up the Grandio we had made this mistake before on other greenhouses and were sure to square it up correctly so we didn't have to waste time disassembling and re-assembling because we were setting it up skewed. Size and Shape of Grandio Greenhouses Currently the Grandio Greenhouses come in two different models with a five different size options for each. The Grandio Ascent is 7 feet 9 inches tall by 8 feet wide, comes in lengths of either 8 feet, 12 feet, 16 feet, 20 feet, and 24 feet, and features an A-frame style roof. This style of roof is great for those gardeners who are concerned about snow build-up, because generally the snow will slide off easily with the straight slope. It also is a great classic look for a greenhouse. The Grandio Elite is 8 feet tall by 8 feet 2 inches wide and comes in lengths of 8 feet, 12 feet, 16 feet, 20 feet, and 24 feet. The Elite has a barn-shaped roof with is a really nice option if you want the maximum amount of headroom.

For taller gardeners or those who will be spending a fair amount of time in the greenhouse this will mean much less bending over and gives more room to move around. Snow load still shouldn't be much of a concern because the only the very top sections of the roof are horizontal enough to gather much snow, and those can easily be brushed off with a broom if necessary. Greenhouse Doors The greenhouse door is something that many of us don't really think about until it comes time to try to move your wheelbarrow inside with a load of compost and you realize that there is no way it will fit. But with the Elite there is about 4' of door width which is plenty of room to get that wheelbarrow through.

They have dual-front doors that slide out which makes for enough room to get into the greenhouse easily, even with equipment or tools. The sliding doors are also nice because even when open they are secure in place. That means the doors won't get flung open or closed due to a breeze (possibly damaging them), which can happen in models with swinging style doors when you've forgotten to close and latch them on some other greenhouses. Base Kit Grandio Elites come with a greenhouse base kit included. This is nice because the greenhouse mounts right into the base, and the base can be set up to either go right into the ground, or it can be bolted into concrete, wood, pavers, or another material. The base itself is made of steel and is strong and sturdy. We found that what has worked best for us is to use the provided base kit and rest it in the soil a few inches below level and then use quick setting concrete at the four corners. This gives it plenty of support and keeps the greenhouse firmly planted in even the worst stormy conditions. Then we filled the inside of the greenhouse with a few inches of gravel, which can be raked aside if you are planting into the soil, and it helps quite a bit with drainage and also helps keep mud off of our garden clogs.

Greenhouse Panels, Insulation, and Heating The type of panel you select when choosing a greenhouse is extremely important. The single biggest factor in how well the greenhouse manages internal temperatures is the panel type and thickness. The panels on the sides and roof of the Grandio Elite are an incredibly thick 10mm twin-wall UV protected polycarbonate manufactured in Germany. If you are unfamiliar with dual-polycarbonate (sometimes also called twin-wall polycarbonate) it can be helpful to think of it as something like a piece of cardboard except with plastic instead of paper. The thicker you go on dual-poly the better at insulating in cold and hot temperatures, and the less money you will spend heating and cooling the greenhouse.

In comparison, many of the hobby greenhouses being sold come standard with only 4mm panels and maybe 6mm panels on some of the better ones, and sometimes the sides and roofs will have different thicknesses on the same greenhouse. Not so with the Elites, they have fully insulated 10mm dual layer panels on all sides, back, and roof. Many of the clear paneled greenhouses are only 1mm thick single layer polycarbonate. That style can look nice, but if you are in an area that has wide temperature swings it will be much more difficult to control the heating and cooling in the greenhouse. 10mm thick panels, like on the Elite, is very insulating and you will be hard pressed to find anything comparable to those panels.

All greenhouses will require some source of heat if you are planning on wintering plants in them, even with 6 to 10 mm panels, but with the Grandios a small electric or oil space heater or two, depending on how large of a greenhouse you choose, is all you should need. Accessories The Elite greenhouses come standard with the essentials needed to be immediately ready for use. All models come with a base kit, roof vents, rain gutters, easy latch double-doors, snow load supports, cross bracing supports, stainless steel nuts and bolts, instructions, etc. There are also a number of optional add-ons such as automatic roof vent openers, trellis kits, drip and irrigation kits, plant hangers, staging benchs and work tables, louver windows, solar lights, and more.

Greenhouse Warranty: The Grandio greenhouses come with a 10 warranty on the panels and a lifetime warranty on the frame. Obviously Grandio believes in their product and would only give it that kind of warranty if they knew that they were high quality units. Final Thoughts We feel confident in recommending both the Ascent and especially the Elite greenhouses from Grandio. They are high-quality units with sturdy frames, thick panels, good instructions, nice accessories, attractive looks, and a long warranty. If you search around and compare these units (which we always think is a good idea) to others you will find that for the money you will not be able to find better greenhouses.

2015 Grandio Elite Greenhouse Reviews

Our Greenhouse Review Panel says: Dollar for dollar, we have found this to be the best deal for a hobby greenhouse on the market today.

After setting up and testing the Grandio Elite greenhouse, we are hard pressed to find anything we didn't like. The key features of the Grandio Elite that led us to award it our #1 Rating and Top Pick are the following: attractive looks, tall barn-style roof, heavy duty frame, 10mm thick twin wall panels, variety of size options, easy assembly, and included accessories.
Attractive Looks - With it's barn-shaped roof, tall 8' height, and dark green frame with nice thick profile pieces, the Grandio Elite truly is a nice looking greenhouse. This may seem like a minor thing to some gardeners, but if you are setting up a greenhouse on your property and plan on seeing it nearly every day for the next decade or so, it certainly is nice to have one that looks great! The pictures don't really do it justice - it is a very attractive greenhouse and the coloring and shape blended nicely against the background of our trees and lawn. And with the frame being powder-coated green (not simply painted like some kits) the color shouldn't fade over time or darken and get blotchy. We love the look of wood-framed greenhouses but they suffer the same fate as wood fences and fade or turn gray and look worse every year unless you sand and re-stain them. The Grandios will look great for years with virtually no maintenance aside from maybe a hose down now and then to wash off the dirt.
8' Tall Barn-Style Roof - The Grandio Elite gives even the tallest person plenty of headroom. It has an 8' peak height and barn shaped roof line. This maximizes the vertical space inside the greenhouse and allows you to stand fully upright when working inside it, even if standing just about against the walls. Many other greenhouse kits will come with peak heights in the 7' to 6' range. That can be okay, but realize that it might mean more crouching and ducking. The height of the Elite also gives you that much more room to do hanging plants, racks and stacking tables, taller plants, etc.
Heavy Duty Aluminum Frame - The Grandio Elite has an impressively thick and sturdy aluminum frame - a quality level that you would expect to see on $5000+ kits. The frame quality of greenhouse kits varies quite a bit and the Grandios are definitely one of the stronger frames we've seen. The frame pieces on metal greenhouses are an area that some manufacturers will try to cut corners and save costs. This can lead to a low sales price, but that can be deceiving when you get one of these and realize that you need to go to your local hardware store and spend $500 to buy reinforcements to keep the cheap greenhouse from blowing over or collapsing when the first fall leaf lands on it.Grandios are designed with heavy frames that will last for years. They come included with snow load supports and cross-brace frame supports. These help keep the greenhouse as rigid as possible and will spread out loads and stresses from winds and snow that may accumulate on it (although from what we can tell only the very top of the roof would gather much snow and we doubt it would ever be enough weight to cause problems.) We also like the fact that the aluminum frames will never warp from heat or rust from moisture.

10MM Thick Twin-Wall Panels - The panels on the Grandio Elite are some of the thickest we've come across on a hobby greenhouse. The whole idea of a greenhouse is to provide a climate controlled environment, and the thicker your panels the more insulation you will have and the easier it will be to both heat and/or cool it. This adds up to money saved on electricity or fuel and a better more stable growing enviroment. We urge you to look around at other hobby greenhouses and you will soon see that many of them come with twin-wall panels that are only 4mm thick - which means the Elite panels at 10mm are 2.5 times thicker! Like the frame, the panels on the Elite are something that we would expect to see on a much more expensive greenhouse, like maybe the Riga V.

Size Options - The Grandio Elite is available in the following sizes: 8x8, 8x12, 8x16, 8x20, and 8x24. This is a great range of lengths and most gardeners should find a size that will fit their need. The greenhouses are also expandable, so if you were to get an 8x12 then decided you really needed more space you could simply order 4' extensions to turn your 8x12 into an 8x16 or bigger. Most greenhouses don't have this option, so it is certainly something to consider if you aren't sure of future size needs.
Easy Assembly - Most, if not all, greenhouse kits will promote themselves by saying they are easy to assemble... after having assembled nearly a dozen different kits we can state quite adamantly that "easy assembly" varies greatly. We hate to bash brands and name names, but there are some greenhouse kits that when you open the boxes it looks like you've just ordered a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. The Grandio on the other hand was not bad at all. It still takes a good few hours, but it has nicely done instructions, well labeled parts, and pieces that go together easily and simply. We even had a couple little helpers at one point (before they lost interest and started making mudpies) but even our kids were able to help hold pieces and screw in the nuts and bolts.
Included Accessories - The accessories that come with a greenhouse should not be overlooked when shopping around. The Grandio Elite comes standard with a base kit, rain gutters, roof windows, snow load kit, and side supports. We chose the Premium package and that had all those accessories just listed plus some automatic roof window openers, plant clips, trellis kit, and a drip kit. We could also have added in some staging tables and benches, but since we've already got plenty of those we didn't get them this time. You can keep it simple or go all out and get all the accessories. Everything we got worked great and we had no problems.
Conclusion: The Grandio Elite is a phenomenal greenhouse for the money. It impressed us with it's strength and durability, with it's super-thick and insulating panels, with it's nice looks, and variety of accessory options. Finally, it also has a very reasonable price, which can save the average buyer hundreds or even thousands of dollars or more over similar sized greenhouses from other manufacturers.

Grandio Ascent - Greenhouse Reviews

Grandio Ascent Greenhouse Reviews:

When shopping for greenhouse kits you quickly learn you will usually need to compromise. You want high strength but give in due to high costs, you want working room but have to go to a larger size than originally wanted, you want easy installation but that generally requires a starter unit. It’s a give and take greenhouse world.
Well those days could be over with the introduction of the Grandio Ascent Greenhouse. The Grandio offers durability, working room, ease of assembly and even attractiveness in one low price.

Grandio sent us over the 8x8 Ascent Greenhouse for inspection and assembly. The first thing we noticed was how the greenhouse came in two easy to carry boxes. When unpacking we were pleasantly surprised to find each piece individually shrink-wrapped to protect the powder-coated aluminum parts and polycarbonate panels. Too many times we’ve seen a greenhouse structure scratch or severally damaged during shipping. This was not the case with the Grandio.

Next we were very pleased with the easy to read and follow instruction manual. A healthy combination of text and illustrations to help out with the process. There are also installation instruction videos posted on youtube to help clarify even more if needed, though this might be overkill due to the ease of assembly. Two people can easily have the greenhouse assembled in just a few hours. Note that all the tools needed were included with the greenhouse, another bonus.

Also included with our greenhouse was the base kit which is often an additional cost in some greenhouses (be sure to check for a base kit when price shopping greenhouse kits.) Grandio includes the base kit in all models. Foundation pegs give you the option of securing it in cement or attaching it to an existing surface.
As we reached the end of our assembly we were amazed how the included rain gutters slide in and secured all the 6 mm panels in place. Greenhouses are known to have issues keeping roof panels secured during wind storms, but the Grandio panels are snug and protected. We can’t see these coming out anytime soon.

The rain gutters working like a “lock” that will only let the panels come out again by removing the gutters. It’s an innovative idea we’re sure others will look to down the road.
Two roof wisndow included that sit flush on the roof and a 42” wide dual door are nice touches too. The dual doors latch with a double-ball catch and have handles on both sides of both doors. Top and bottom rollers make the door even more functional. Swing doors can make taking a wheelbarrow or cart in and out of the greenhouse difficult. So another great idea from Grandio that people will appreciate starting day one of use.

The 8x8 greenhouse has 7’9” of peak headroom which is a good height and not easy to find in a consumer product. Your back will thank you no matter how many hanging plants you have.
Now back to the durability. Grandio plans ahead by including the support kit with the unit. If strength is an issue this is another reason to consider a Grandio Greenhouse.
After completion we were very pleased with the look of the Grandio Ascent. Smooth lines and the deep green powder coat makes it a very attractive greenhouse. The opaque UV coated panels easily clean and are backed by a 10 year warranty. The entire greenhouse is covered by the same 10 year warranty so you’ll also have piece of mind with your purchase.

One final praise of the Grandio Ascent and perhaps the biggest - the price. Grandio Greenhouses offer extremely good value and price their 8x8 Ascent at just $999 and the 8x12 at $1399. For the quality you get and the included 6mm panels and base kit, they could easily charge $1500 to $2500. Again, be sure to check what accessories and panels come with other models when you are researching.  So if you thought you couldn’t pay less and get more, looks like this time you are wrong. Great job Grandio!
